Hi Gang! You know, when construction workers build a building, they use all sorts of tools! The same is true when God builds us into Christian kids. Construction workers use things like a wrench, a hammer, a level, a saw. What tools does God use? Would you believe a wrench, a level, a hammer or a saw?
God uses a level in our lives like a carpenter uses a level when he builds a house. A level makes sure that the house is built straight up and down and completely level. When we aren't exactly even in our love for the people around us, or our love isn't straight up to God, what does God use?
One tool God uses is the Bible! The Bible is like a level, that helps keep us standing straight up in our love for God, and completely level as we love the people around us. In the Bible Jesus says, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37-40) The whole Bible (All the Law and the Prophets) is given to us to help us do two things: Love God, and Love our Neighbor. Loving God is like making sure there is an absolutely straight line between us and God in Heaven. The Bible helps us make sure that line is straight up to God. (Like a level makes sure that a wall is standing straight up.) The Bible teaches us the kinds of things that we should do if we love God, and the kinds of things we should not do if we love God.
"I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws." (Psalm 119:7) See, the Bible (which includes God's righteous laws) helps keep our hearts upright! The Bible also teaches us how to behave toward other people. It is in the Bible that we read, "Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." (Philippians 2:4) It is in the Bible that we read about Jesus teaching us to love others, including our enemies! (Matthew 5:43-44) Loving our neighbor is like there is a completely level line between us and the people around us and that we treat others the same way we want to be treated. The Bible helps us make sure that line is completely level. (Like a level makes sure that the floor in a house is completely level.) Sometimes we may not want to do what the Bible says we should. But remember, the Bible is like a level, that keeps us loving God and the people around us, just like God wants us to do.
