Hi Gang! You know, when construction workers build a building, they use all sorts of tools! The same is true when God builds us into Christian kids. Construction workers use things like a wrench, a hammer, a level, a saw. What tools does God use? Would you believe a wrench, a level, a hammer or a saw?
OUCH!!! That sounds like it will HURT! A hammer hits a nail on the head. I don't want to be hit on the head! In fact, that's why I'm wearing a yellow hard hat, so I can't get hit on the head! But I've never heard a nail yell "Ouch!", have you? That's because nails are built to take it. It doesn't hurt them at all. Instead, getting hit on the head is good for the nail, because then the nail can go deep down into the board the way it is supposed to. A nail doesn't do any good unless it is buried deep in the wood. The hammer God uses is prayer! Prayer doesn't seem like a hammer, does it? But it really is, because when we pray, we get deeper and deeper into our Christian faith and love for Jesus! It's hard to really love someone you can never talk with. So if you want to really love someone more, you should talk with them more. Maybe your grandma and grandpa don't live very close to you. But I bet you like to talk with them on the telephone! When you talk with them, you know how much you love them. When we talk with Jesus, in prayer, we learn to love Jesus even more and more. It's like a nail going deeper and deeper into the wood. The Bible says "Pray continually." (I Thessalonians 5:17) If we only pray every once in a while, we won't get to know and love Jesus very well. It's like tapping a nail only once or twice. The nail won't go very deep, and will fall out very easily. If you keep hammering, the nail goes deeper and deeper, and gets stronger and stronger. If we keep praying, we go deeper and deeper into our love for Jesus, and get stronger and stronger spiritually. Sometimes we don't feel close to God because we are worried about something else. Prayer can help. The Bible says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." (Philippians 4:6) The result, the Bible says will be God's peace -- "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:7) Since the Bible teaches us to love our neighbor, praying for other people is an important way to grow in love for both our neighbor and God. The Bible says, "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone." (1 Timothy 2:1) Sometimes we may not feel like praying. But if we want to move deeper and deeper into love for God, then we need to keep letting God hit us on the head with the hammer of prayer. And I promise, you WON'T get a headache from it!
